Momentum is building for the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act — and for the millions of Americans who depend on AM radio every day. Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee included the bipartisan legislation in its surface transportation package, marking a major step forward in the effort to protect AM radio in vehicles. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act would ensure automakers maintain easy access to AM radio in new vehicles for consumers. It also requires consumer disclosures if a vehicle does not include AM radio and directs the government to study whether any alternative communication system can match AM radio’s unique role in public safety and emergency communications.

AM radio remains a lifeline for communities across the country. During hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and other emergencies, AM stations deliver trusted, real-time information when other communications systems fail. AM radio also serves rural communities, connects listeners to local news and agriculture reports, and provides diverse programming relied on by millions of Americans every day. The bill has garnered overwhelming bipartisan support, including hundreds of policymakers and a broad coalition of public safety, consumer and community organizations.

At the committee markup, several members of Congress spoke powerfully about AM radio’s essential service to local communities and its critical public safety role.

Congress must finish the job. It is time to pass the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act and protect Americans’ access to trusted, free and local AM radio.
