More than 80 million Americans listen to AM radio each month and depend on it for news, talk, traffic, weather and sports. Nearly 17% of all AM stations serve niche and diverse communities by providing programming in various languages, gospel and spiritual programs, and trusted voices and perspectives.

Yet despite the continued popularity of AM radio, certain carmakers have removed AM from their new vehicle models, which presents a dire public safety risk.

AM radio serves as the backbone of our nation’s emergency alert system. There are 80 AM stations around the country that reach 90% of Americans. These stations are responsible for distributing emergency alert messages to radio, television and cable systems. This important role in disseminating messages during times of catastrophic danger is exactly why policymakers and former Federal Emergency Management Agency leaders are calling on automakers to keep AM radio in cars.

In new radio spots distributed this week, NAB is asking listeners to contact Congress by texting AM to 52886 and telling them to keep AM radio in cars.

Learn more about the Americans who depend on AM radio and what you can do to help.
